Dragon Types: Colors and Tails

Dragon types in the Empyrean series come down to two things: color and tail. There are six dragon colors, five battle tail types and the rare feathertail. Use this chart to see what you could bond during Threshing on Dragonkind or in our free Threshing Day quiz.

Dragon types by color

ColorIn the booksThe rider it chooses (quiz result)
Red Dragon portrait Red Dragon Quick to temper, Red Scorpiontails most of all. The cadet rule: never look a red in the eye. You lead with courage and instinct. When the Vale goes quiet, you are the cadet who steps forward instead of waiting to be chosen.
Orange Dragon portrait Orange Dragon Ranging from apricot to carrot, oranges are known as the most unpredictable dragons. You thrive on chaos and improvisation. Plans are suggestions, and you are at your best when nobody, including you, knows what comes next.
Brown Dragon portrait Brown Dragon The field guide is blunt: showing a brown any trepidation is a mistake you will not repeat. You are the one the squad leans on. Loyal, grounded and patient, you would rather outlast a problem than rush it.
Green Dragon portrait Green Dragon Greens are the most reasonable dragons. The cadet rule: never back down from a green. You think before you move. Where other cadets panic, you read the terrain, weigh the odds and pick the smartest path through the Vale.
Blue Dragon portrait Blue Dragon Known for formidable size and the most ruthless temperament. Blue Daggertails are the rarest blues. You carry yourself with quiet intensity. You do not need the spotlight, but anyone who threatens your people learns how sharp you are.
Black Dragon portrait Black Dragon The rarest color, with none born in the last century, and considered the smartest and most discerning. You were not supposed to survive this, and you did anyway. Black dragons choose riders others underestimate, and they rarely choose at all.

"In the books" is based on Fourth Wing. Rider descriptions are our quiz's interpretation.
